Big Stelios’ Taverna

2013 - 24" x 16" - Watercolor, Arches Aquarelle watercolor paper

As Barbara Wille and her two grandnieces were walking down a lovely street in Greece, they came upon a colorful eating establishment that they couldn’t resist capturing in a photograph.

Back in the United States, Mrs. Wille’s grandniece created a book of photos from their trip for her. Barb then decided she wanted to bring a bit of Europe into her living room to remember and further enjoy their trip together. She commissioned me to do this painting of Big Stelios’ Taverna.

This was such a fun project. I began searching the internet for translations of the various signs, but had some difficulty. My friend Gene Tester contacted his friend Mr. Jim Crow, who was fluent in Greek, to help. Jim has friends in Greece, and they helped, as well. I was able to pass all my findings off to Barbara Wille.

In Big Stelios’ Taverna, you can enjoy a small plate of fish and a glass of wine as you relax with friends. Nice!
